Opera is free to use web browser created from the Chromium browser code base. Opera is a cross-platform web browser and can be installed on Windows, macOS and Linux operating systems. Since Opera browser is not purely open source, its software packages are not on Standard Linux distribution APT repositories.

In this article we will add the Opera APT repository to our MX Linux and install the package from there. Some of the cool features provided by Opera Browser are:

  • Has Free VPN Solution embedded in it to provide security and enhanced privacy
  • Ad blocker which helps you block annoying ads and trackers.
  • Flow which allows you to send information between devices.
  • Video pop-out – Detach video into a floating window.
  • Messengers feature for chatting right in your browsers.
  • Snapshot feature for capturing and editing snapshots of pages.
  • Battery saver.
  • Among many other features

Method 1: Install Opera Web Browser on MX Linux from Package Manager

On MX Linux there is a desktop tool called Package Manager which allows you to easily install software packages packaged in .deb format on the system. Depending on package distribution mechanism it can configure repository on the system or download and install a Debian package directly.

Search and launch “Package Manager” tool.

Opera

When asked to authenticate input your user account login password.

In the next screen use the search function and input “Opera”

Hit the “Install” button to begin installation of Opera browser on MX Linux.

Agree to update Opera browser with other OS packages.

This installation method also adds the repository under /etc/apt/sources.list.d/opera-stable.list

Method 2: Manual Installation of Opera Web Browser on MX Linux

Login to your MX Linux and update packages list index

sudo apt update

Install basic dependency packages required

sudo apt install lsb-release ca-certificates apt-transport-https software-properties-common -y

Import Opera repository GPG key.

wget -qO- https://deb.opera.com/archive.key | sudo apt-key add -

Then add the APT repository with Opera packages to your MX Linux system.

echo "deb [arch=i386,amd64] https://deb.opera.com/opera-stable/ stable non-free" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/opera-stable.list

Update Package index:

$ sudo apt update
Hit:1 https://mirror.liquidtelecom.com/mxlinux/packages/mx/repo buster InRelease
Hit:2 http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/deb stable InRelease                                                                                            
Hit:3 http://deb.debian.org/debian buster-updates InRelease                               
Hit:4 http://deb.debian.org/debian buster InRelease                
Hit:5 http://deb.debian.org/debian-security buster/updates InRelease
Hit:6 https://deb.opera.com/opera-stable stable InRelease
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree       
Reading state information... Done
4 packages can be upgraded. Run 'apt list --upgradable' to see them.

Then install Opera web browser on MX Linux:

sudo apt install opera-stable

Opera Web browser can be started from the terminal or Desktop launcher.

$ opera

Enjoy using Opera web browser on your MX Linux Desktop system.
