Let’s look at how to install IntelliJ IDEA on Pop!_OS 20.04|20.10|21.04, on this tutorial. IntelliJ IDEA is an IDE that is based on JAVA and created by Jetbrains to aid in developing computer software. It is available in three forms of Apache 2, the community edition, educational and the (ultimate)commercial edition. The community edition is free and open source while the ultimate edition is paid and comes with some extra features. You can check out the features of IntelliJ IDEA on the Jetbrains page. The prerequisites include;

  • Minimum 2GB RAM, recommended 8GB total
  • Disk space of 2.5 GB and another 1 GB for caches, recommended 5GB
  • Monitor resolution minimum of 1024×768, recommended 1920×1080
  • Latest 64-bit version of Windows, macOS, or Linux (for example, Debian, Ubuntu, or RHEL)

Install IntelliJ IDEA on Pop!_OS 20.04|20.10|21.04

On our previous article, we looked at how to install Pycharm IDE on Pop!_OS, Pycharm was also developed by Jetbrains just like the IntelliJ IDEA. Now let’s focus on how to install IntelliJ IDEA on Pop!_OS. Before, you begin installation, ensure that you got sudo privileges. Here, we are going to use snap to do our installation;

Step 1. Update System

To update your system, use the following command;

sudo apt update

Step 2. Install IntelliJ IDEA on Pop!_OS using snap

You can use snap to install any type of IntelliJ IDEA on your Pop!_OS system, it could be the community edition, which is free and open source, the ultimate edition that is paid or the Educational edition. All the above can be installed using snap, as shown below respectively;

For community edition, use the command;

sudo snap install intellij-idea-community --classic

The output;

[email protected]:~$ sudo snap install intellij-idea-community --classic
intellij-idea-community 2021.1.3 from jetbrains✓ installed

For the ultimate edition;

sudo snap install intellij-idea-ultimate --classic

For the educational edition, use the command below;

sudo snap install intellij-idea-educational --classic

Step 3. Launch IntelliJ IDEA on Pop!_OS

To launch the installed IntelliJ IDEA, use the commands below depending on the edition that was installed;

$ intellij-idea-community
$ intellij-idea-ultimate
$ intellij-idea-educational

From the above process, you can choose to install any edition of IntelliJ IDEA on Pop!_OS easily by just using snap. Having finished with the installation, let’s check how to uninstall IntelliJ IDEA using snap;

Use the commands below to be able to remove or rather uninstall any of the editions above. For community edition, utilize;

sudo snap remove intellij-idea-community

For ultimate edition;

sudo snap remove intellij-idea-ultimate

For the educational edition;

sudo snap remove intellij-idea-educational
