There are two ways to install Microsoft Edge on Pop!_OS, which actually applies to other Linux distros out there. The two methods include the use of GUI(Graphical user Interface) of the Linux distribution and the other one is through the command line. Microsoft Edge is a web browser just like any other, Google Chrome etc. However there are those that prefer the other over others. On this article, we will look at the two ways of installation separately, so that you as the user can make a decision on which approach you will take.

Install Microsoft Edge on Pop!_OS

The following is a step by step process that will guide you towards installing Microsoft Edge on Pop!_OS;

  • Step 1. Visit the MS Edge download Page

Go to the Edge website on your browser (Firefox) etc and type Microsoft Edge for Linux, then get the the Dev channel for Linux(.deb) Ubuntu/ Debian version. Just like as shown;

Click download, then accept the Edge license terms and continue.

  • Step 2. Commence Download

Click download, then accept the Edge license, then choose what to open with then save the file and the download will commence.

  • Step 3. Browse to where the downloaded Edge file is and install it manually

For our case, it is in the downloads section;

Double click/right click on the file to open and allow for installations;

Click on install, then provide the password and continue;

  • Step 4. Check for successful installation and Launch

To do this, open activities on your Pop!-OS GUI, then show applications, there you will see edge installed successfully;

Install Microsoft Edge on Pop!_OS from the Command Line

If you decide not to use the GUI to install Microsoft Edge on Pop!_OS, you can still use the command Line and you will achieve the same output.

  • Step 1. Update your system

Ensure that you do an update on your Linux system by typing the following command;

sudo apt update
  • Step 2. Import Microsoft GPG Key, so as to authenticate the packages, then install it

To download the Microsoft edge GPG key, use the following command;

curl | gpg --dearmor > microsoft.gpg

Then install the GPG key using the following command;

sudo install -o root -g root -m 644 microsoft.gpg /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d/
  • Step 3. Enable the Microsoft Edge Browser Repository, then update your system

This contains all the Microsoft Edge browser packages, needed for its installation. Use the following command;

sudo sh -c 'echo "deb [arch=amd64] stable main" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/microsoft-edge-dev.list'

To update your system, use;

sudo apt update
  • Step 4. Install Microsoft Edge on Pop!_OS

Since you already got what was needed for Edge installation, install the browser on your system. Use the following command;

sudo apt install microsoft-edge-dev

The output;

[email protected]:~$ sudo apt install microsoft-edge-dev
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree       
Reading state information... Done
microsoft-edge-dev is already the newest version (92.0.873.1-1).
  • Step 5. Check if Microsoft Edge was installed successfully on Pop!_OS

You can check the availability of Edge from the Pop!_OS GUI. Just go to show applications and search for the browser and you will find it there, successfully installed.


Using any of the above methods gets you to successfully install Microsoft Edge on Pop!_OS. And as you can see from the description above, the processes are easy to follow and do.
